CertainTeed & Alside — honest, durable, maintenance-free. Owner-supervised. MN Lic# BC809688.

Vinyl is the most cost-effective siding option and the right choice for many homeowners. It's not the premium option — but it's durable, maintenance-free, and improves curb appeal significantly over aging original siding. We'll be straight with you about what vinyl does and doesn't do.

Vinyl Products We Install

CertainTeed — Cedar Impressions & Monogram

CertainTeed's premium vinyl lines use color that runs solid through the material — so minor surface scratches don't show white underneath. Cedar Impressions mimics the look of wood shakes convincingly. Monogram is the workhorse lap siding option with a strong warranty and wide color range.

  • Color through the material — not just surface
  • 40+ color options
  • Lifetime limited warranty

Alside — Mezzo & Prodigy

Alside's insulated vinyl lines are the practical upgrade when energy performance matters. Prodigy insulated siding has a foam backing that significantly improves thermal resistance — closer to fiber cement in performance than standard vinyl. A smart option for homeowners who want vinyl economics with better energy return.

  • Foam-backed insulated options available
  • Better thermal performance than standard vinyl
  • 40+ color options

What Vinyl Doesn't Do — Honest Assessment

Luis won't oversell vinyl. Here's what to know going in:

  • Impact vulnerability: Vinyl can crack in extreme cold if hit hard — a wayward puck, a ladder, a falling branch. Individual panels can be replaced, but matching color on older siding can be difficult.
  • Heat warping: Unlikely in Minnesota's climate, but possible on extreme south-facing walls in full sun. Premium vinyl with higher heat resistance ratings mitigates this.
  • Can't be painted: The color is permanent — vinyl cannot be effectively painted long-term. If you want a color change later, you'd need to replace the siding.
  • HOA restrictions: Some HOAs prohibit or restrict vinyl siding — always check your covenants before requesting an estimate. We'll tell you upfront if your HOA is likely to reject a vinyl proposal.

When Vinyl Is the Right Call

Vinyl makes excellent sense in specific situations:

  • You're on a tighter budget and need a full replacement now
  • Your home is not in an HOA with material restrictions
  • You're planning to sell in the next few years and want to improve curb appeal without a major investment
  • You want near-zero maintenance for the life of the siding
  • Your existing siding is failing and fiber cement isn't in the budget

If none of those apply and you're looking for maximum longevity and value, Luis will tell you to look at James Hardie or LP SmartSide instead. That's the honest answer.

Check Your HOA Before You Call

Vinyl Siding FAQs

20–30 years with proper installation. The main failure modes are UV fading (most quality vinyl has UV inhibitors), impact damage, and heat warping on extreme south exposures.

Not effectively. The color is part of the material and paint adhesion on vinyl is poor long-term. If you want a color change later, you'd need to replace the siding.

Standard vinyl is not especially energy efficient. Insulated vinyl (foam backing, like Alside Prodigy) is significantly better — closer to fiber cement in thermal performance. We can quote both if you want to compare.

CertainTeed and Alside both offer 40+ colors. We'll help you match your HOA's approved palette and provide the product documentation for your board submission.
